Rembrandt is the most famous of the seventeenth-century Dutch painters. However,
there are doubts whether some paintings attributed to Rembrandt were actually
painted by him. One such painting is known as Portrait of an Elderly Woman in
a White Bonnet. The painting was attributed to Rembrandt because of its style, and
indeed the representation of the woman's face is very much like that of portraits
known to be by Rembrandt. But there are problems with the painting that suggest it
could not be a work by Rembrandt.
First, there is something inconsistent about the way the woman in the portrait is
dressed. She is wearing a white linen cap of a kind that only servants would wearyet
the coat she is wearing has a luxurious fur collar that no servant could afford.
Rembrandt, who was known for his attention to the details of his subjects' clothing,
would not have been guilty of such an inconsistency.
Second, Rembrandt was a master of painting light and shadow, but in this painting
these elements do not fit together. The face appears to be illuminated by light
reflected onto it from below. But below the face is the dark fur collar, which would
absorb light rather than reflect it. So the face should appear partially in shadowwhich
is not how it appears. Rembrandt would never have made such an error.
Finally, examination of the back of the painting reveals that it was painted on a
panel made of several pieces of wood glued together. Although Rembrandt often
painted on wood panels, no painting known to be by Rembrandt uses a panel glued
together in this way from several pieces of wood.
For these reasons the painting was removed from the official catalog of Rembrandt's
paintings in the 1930s.
The professor completely repudiates the information given in the passage. The passage claims that Portrait of an Elderly woman in White Bonnet was not the work of Rembrandt based on inconsistency in dressing, the use of light and shadow and the panel of wood pieces. However, the lecture presents specific reasonings to debunk all of the inferences drawn in the passage.
Firstly, the assertion of the passage that inconsistency of the dressing doesn't accord with the meticulous painting of the Rembrandt is refuted by revealing the information that the fur color was added hundred of years later the original painting was produced. The professor avers that somebody added the color later with an intention to represent the lady as an appealing aristocrat so as to increase the value of the painting.
Secondly, the lecture addresses the problem with light and shadow. Based on information obtained from re-examination, the professor reveals that when the fur color was removed the original painting in light color was revealed. This illuminated the face from below.
Thirdly, the professor states that the original painting was produced in the single wood panel. The extra pieces were added later to make the painting appear larger. In addition, the wood panel of the original painting was found to be obtained from the same tree as the wood panel in which self-portrait with the hat was painted by Rembrandt.
Therefore, providing information and logical evidence from the re-examination of the painting, the professor debunks any plausible misconception that the portrait of the elderly lady wasn't painted by Rembrandt. Moreover, she asserts that with an intention to make the painting more grand and valuable, probably to make it more expensive, the further manipulation (in the fur color and wood panel) was done in the painting.
