The table shows the number of students who carried out research in Australian universities, and the pie charts illustrate the proportion of these students by gender. The figures were given for 2001 and 2010.
Overall, the number of Australian research students increased significantly over the given period. Besides, the figure for local students is always higher than that for international ones.
In 2001, the majority of students researching in Australia were local (33,657) compared to only 5,192 students from outside the country. By 2010, the number of local students had risen to nearly 40,000, and international research students had also witnessed a nearly threefold increase in its population, to 54,081 to be specific.
In 2001, the proportion of local male students was equal to that of females, at 43% for each, while there was a gender difference among international students, with the figure for females (9%) being more than twice as high as that for international males (4%). Over the following ten years, female local students outnumbered their male counterparts, with the percentage of the former being 4% higher. However, in the international group, the proportion of female students was slightly lower than that for males.
