The following is a recommendation from the personnel director to the president of Acme Publishing Company.
"Many other companies have recently stated that having their employees take the Easy Read Speed-Reading Course has greatly improved productivity. One graduate of the course was able to read a 500-page report in only two hours; another graduate rose from an assistant manager to vice president of the company in under a year. Obviously, the faster you can read, the more information you can absorb in a single workday. Moreover, Easy Read would cost Acme only $500 per employee—a small price to pay when you consider the benefits. Included in this fee is a three-week seminar in Spruce City and a lifelong subscription to the Easy Read newsletter. Clearly, to improve productivity, Acme should require all of our employees to take the Easy Read course."
Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered in order to decide whether the advice and the argument on which it is based are reasonable. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions would help to evaluate the advice.
The argument with conclusion that Acme should require their employees to take the Easy Read course is weak. It is based on the premises that many other companies began to have their employees take the course, that there are two successful examples, one for improvement in reading ability, while the other for promotion, that the faster you can read, the more quickly you can absorb information, that the cost is rather low comparing to the benifit. However, there are many questions needed to be answered, as explained in the following paragraphs.
First, does reading faster necessarily result in gaining more information? There may be such a tendency that intelligent people can earn knowledge more quickly. However, is it the same case for capability to read a book fast? As in mind for most people, there may be some math problems which can't be solved even though how many times we try. How could simply a glance give one insight on them? As a result, the question stated deserve more explanation, in order to reinforce the argument.
Moreover, does the advantage resulted from reading faster surely lead to success, such as promotion mentioned in the argument? It is believed that, with more information, people have higher chance to succeed on certain vacation such as marketing manager. How about technology designer with good ability to read marketing magazines more quickly while little grasp for novel progress in machine technology? Does it give him a promotion? It is worthdoubt, and, therefore, needed to be answered.
In a addition, how about other graduates for the fancy course? There are just two example provided in the argument? Assuming there are many other examples that people get a great ability to read as well as a promotion and success coming along, the recommendation then worth reconsideration. However, if there are just these two successful examples, leaving the others struggling with the austere bosses? Actually, even in the two example, there is a seperation between ability to read faster and promotion, that is, the two guys are different people, no guarantee that the one with good reading ability got a promotion and the other with a promotion capable to read fast.
In the end, the argument is rather weak. However, if these three questions are explained in it, it will be greatly strengthened. Therefore, there is no need to follow the instruction. The argument is hardly to be accepted.
