comics
The reading and the lecture are both about “comic strips” and the possible influence that American culture had on comics and on comic characters worldwide. Nonetheless, disagreement exists. In fact, the author and the lecturer have opposing views in relation to the following.
First of all, the author of the reading explains why some of these comic strips are considered an American art form. To support his view, the author relies on the nationalities of some of these authors, like Hogan’s Alley and Superman. The lecturer, on the other hand, argues that the position of the author is not accurate, claiming that Hogan’s Alley’s author was an immigrant from Hungary and that Joe Schuster, Superman’s author, was actually Canadian.
Secondly, the author points out that these American comic strips had influence in some European and Japanese comics. He points out that Japan’s manga and famous Belgium’s Tin Tin were a result of this American art form. In contrast, the lecturer explains that even before American comic strips were released, some other comic characters already existed in countries like Britain and Switzerland. Importantly, the lecturer adds that Tin Tin from Belgium existed 60 years before American Superman.
Finally, the lecturer gives some credit to the author by saying that there could have been American influence in comic strips in Europe as a result of the publishing of The Smurfs, and especially with the appearance of Disney.
