It has been said, “Not everything that is learned is contained in books.” Compare and contrast knowledge gained from experience with knowledge gained from books. In your opinion, which source is more important? Why? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

There is no age bar to gain knowledge. It can be increased by anyone at any time of their lives. We learn something new every day of our lives. It could be from experience or books. It is very true when one says that not everything that is learned is contained in books.

Through books we get to learn a lot of things. Books have information that many don’t remember or know. Every time we take a book we get to absorb something new. Throughout our school years we study so much about the Earth, safety measures, new languages, history and so much more. As we go to universities we gain new knowledge about people, survival and add-on to what we have learnt.

When we join the work-place we get a chance to learn more and experiment what we have learnt from books. This lets us decide how much we have learnt is true. An intern in the hospital may have studied how a surgery takes place. But he/she gains true knowledge when he/she get the opportunity to actually perform it with an experienced surgeon. The surgeon may also give him/her tips that he/she may never have studied before.

Based on experience and experiment people discover something new which challenges what is taught in books. For instance Pluto was said to be the ninth planet of our solar system which was later changed to be called a dwarf planet.

We all learn from our past. Books tell us what happened in the past and what people have discovered so far. Experience not only challenges what we have learnt but makes us think out of the box to come up with solutions that haven’t been thought about before. Had people not studied how Mr Bell invented telephone and applied their knowledge based on their experience and experiment we would not have had smartphones today.

Indeed books are a huge source of information. But how to use that source of information can only be learnt from experience. Thus both sources are equally important to have complete knowledge.
