The reading passage and the lecturer discuss about using of ethanol instead of gasoline in the United States. The passage claims that ethanol is not a good replacement for gasoline, while the lecturer refutes this idea by presenting three following reasons.

First of all, ethanol will not increase global warming because ethanol is made from corn plant. Corn plants use CO2 to grow. Therefore, although ethanol produces CO2, corn plants counteract this effect.

Secondly, ethanol dose not reduce the animals food because it is made from a part of corn plant, called “Selluce”, which is not eaten by animals. Thus, the lecturer rejects what the passage states.

Finally, it is true that these days the price of ethanol is equal to gasoline due to government subsidies, but after a while, when people buy ethanol more and more, production of ethanol will increase, and as a result its price will go down. For example, if production of ethanol increases three times, the price reduces approximately forthy percent.
