The tables compare the sales of coffee and bananas that are labeled Fairtrade in 5 different countries in Europe in 1999 and 2004.
It is noticeable that the overall amounts of money spent on coffee and bananas in 5 surveyed countries rose despite downward trends in the figures for bananas in Belgium and Sweden.
In the year 1999, a mere 1.5 million euros Fairtrade earned from selling coffee in the UK, while the sales figures for bananas in this country were significantly higher, at 15 million euros. By contrast, Switzerland spent 3 million euros on coffee in 1999, but only 1 million euros on bananas. The sales of the two products were similar, between 0.6 and 2 million euros in other countries.
In 2004, coffee sales in the UK and Switzerland experienced just over tenfold and doubled growths to 20 and 6 million euros, respectively. There were no significant changes in the figures for the three remaining countries in terms of coffee sales. Thí year, although Belgium and Sweden saw a marginal drop of 0.8 and 1.1 million euros in their sales of bananas, opposite trends were seen in the UK, Switzerland, and Denmark with the respective figures reaching 47, 5.5, and 4 million euros.
