The chart below shows the percentage of households in owed and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.

The chart provides information about the household rates in terms of owned and rented accommodation in two European countries from 1918 to 2011.

Overall, rented accommodation experienced an upward trend, while owned accommodation showed a downward trend throughout the period. Both accommodation rates has some fluctuations. Although, owned accommodation initially had a lower rate, it outraced rented accommodation at the end of the period.

Rented accommodation rate was about 76% in 1918, being higher than owned accommodation rate by approximately 53%. Then it declined to about in following two years 1939 and 1953 respectively. Moreover, the figure showed a gradual decrease to about 59% in 1961, and continue to decline steadily to the end of the period, reaching 40% in 1981 and hitting a low-point to about 32% in 1991 and 2001 respectively. However, it showed up a slight increased to the end of the period reaching around 37% in 2011.

Percentage of households in owned accommodation was less than 30% in 1918, when about one fourth of people preferred to live in owned house ( as opposed to the 75% more than rented house). Then, it increased to about 32% in following two years 1939 and 1953 respectively and continued to rose up to the end of the period and reaching around 69% in 2001 and hitting a low-point of about 54% in 2011.
