Some people believe that everyone should be free to make their own lifestyle choices, even if those choices are unhealthy. Other people think that the government should intervene to influence people’s choices, for example by putting high taxes on unhealthy products.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Nowadays, more and more people are following unhealthy lifestyles and this problem leads to a negative influence on the society as a whole. Many people think that the government is responsible for solving this problem, while others disagree as it depends on personal choices. In this essay, I will discuss on both sides of this controversial debate and follow my point of view.

On the one hand, since the human rights have become more and more pronounced in every aspect of the modern societies, it represents freedom for people to make their own lifestyle choices. In addition, it is unwise to force people to adopt a healthy way of living if they are unwilling to do, as each person might have different interest and choices. For example, many people prefer indulging themselves in fast food or have an addiction to alcohol, as ways to relieve stress and satisfy their demand after a lot of strain. Therefore, it is up to each individual to make up his mind about the way he enjoys life.

On the other hand, various negative effects may stem from such unhealthy lifestyles. Firstly, many mental and physical problems may arise from these bad habits, for example, with the excessive use of alcohol drinking or the poor diet of convenience food, people may be inclined to obesity or inadequate development. Besides, the most alarming impact of the such lifestyles is possibly the adverse influence on other people in the community.

Turning to possible solutions, the government should take the initiative to ensure the health of their residents for various reasons. First and foremost, improving the health of the citizens eventually leads to a decrease in disease burden and healthcare-related expenditure. This money can be utilized by the authorities for other beneficial purposes like building infrastructure or children education, etc. Secondly, the government has the authority to increase taxes on unhealthy products, so that it will decrease the availability to the people and ultimately improve the health of the public. Moreover, the immediate step would be to promote a more active lifestyles which help to detoxify the lifestyles of the people affected. This could be done through the government sponsorship of sport events, which hopefully ameliorates the negative effects of the situation, for example, if sport champions or figureheads speak out these dangers, the message may somehow get through better to the community.

In conclusion, from my personal perspective, it is the joint responsibility of both the individual and the government. Everyone has his own rights to consume anything for his demand as long as it does not harm other people. Simultaneously, the government is also responsible for ensuring a healthier, disease-free community by encouraging the health benefits of more active pursuits.
