The reading and the lecture are both about the reason of the decline of sea otters. The author of the reading feels that the main reason is because of the pollution. The lecturer challenges the claims made by the author. He is of the opinion that it is because of the predator and not the pollution.
To begin with, the author argues that the oil rigs and chemicals are the cause of death of sea otters. The article mentions that their immune system decreased that resulted to death. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by mentioning that there is lack of otters being washed by the water if the real cause of death is pollution. Additionally he says that predators already ate the sea otters that is why we see seldom of them floating on the water.
Secondly, the writer suggests that other sea mammals also died because of pollution such as seals. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by mentioning that predators such as orca eat the other sea mammals. He elaborates on this by bringing up the point that orca eat smaller pieces such as seals, and other sea mammals because their main food whales are hunted by people.
Finally, the author mentions that the pollution is the reason of uneven decline of sea otters. In contrast, the lecturer position is it is because of predator. He notes that predators go to a differ area, and eat many sea otters. But on the shallow area, predators cannot go there. As a result, many sea otters are still alive in shallow areas.
