Have you ever used matches? Matches are used a long time ago for many purposes. The main use of them is to make fire! Before matches were invented, people used stones to make a fire to use it for heating, cooking, and lighting. Have you ever known how matches are made and what are they made from? Of course, they're made of wood! Let's discover how they are made. The process of making matches has several stages. Here is a typical sequence of operations of manufacturing wooden-stick matches:

Cutting the matchsticks:
First, Wood logs of trees are cut to be used. Logs are put in peeler machines and rotate while a blade peels the outer bark of the tree. The tree bark is cut into veneer sheets. The sheets are stripped and cut into thin and small pieces using a chopper.

Treating the matchsticks:
The matchsticks are dumped into a large tank that contains a solution of Ammonium Phosphate. After the sticks have soaked for several minutes, they are placed in a dryer to be dried and cleaned. After that, the matchsticks are dumped into a hopper to be blown through a metal duct into the storage area.

Forming the match heads:
The matches are transferred from the storage area into small holes through a hopper ends with a long tube that takes them to an inserter. The sticks are placed on a long steel belt that holds them upside down and immerses the lower portion of them in a Paraffin wax tank. Then the sticks are positioned in a massive tank full of based chemicals to make the matches head. Finally, the tip chemicals are used for matches as the last solution. This cycle repeats itself several times. In the end, the perforated steel belt loops up and down several times as the matches dry for 60 minutes.

Packaging the matches:
It's the last operation in making matches process. When matchsticks are dry, the belt moves them to the packaging area and they are put into boxes. Now you can buy them from the supermarket!

The use of matches has declined nowadays due to the availability of inexpensive lighters, or maybe due to the development of the automatic lighting devices of gas-fired stoves. However, matches will continue to be in demand worldwide.
