Essay topics:

The two pie charts below show the average household expenditures in a country in 1950 and 2010.

The two pie charts illustrate the share of household spending in a country between 1950 and 2010.

It is clear that, the percentage of total expenditure was by far the highest in 1950, while the figure for food was much higher than that for others in 2010.

According to the pie chart, in 1950, expenditure on housing stood at a large proportion. Approximately one tenth of total spending was allocated to food. 6.6% of total expenditure went on education. The figures for transportation and other expenses were not quite as high as that, each at around 4%, followed by health care representing 2.4%, the lowest.

From 1950 to 2010, spending on housing declined dramatically to just over one fifth. By contrast, the figure for food increased substantially to around a third at the end of the period. Expenditure on education remained almost unchanged, at 6.5% in 2010. The proportion of total budget for other expenses improved significantly to nearly 20%, whereas that for transportation rose to a small number by the end of the period. The percentage of health care climbed marginally to almost 5% by 2010.
