Question: Summarise the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on specific points made in the reading passage.
The author supports the Peary claims that he reached the North Pole. Professor cast doubts on the author points that Peary had reached the North Pole
The author proposes three arguments to support the Peary claims that he indeed reached the North Pole. However, the professor says there is no solid evidence for supporting the peary claims and the author's reasons for support are not very convincing. He counters all three reasons for the support of the author.
First, as the author says the National geographic society conducted an investigation on Peary expeditions. The thorough investigation of the committee concluded that he had indeed reached the North Pole. The professor explains that yes it is true that National geographic Society declared that Peary did indeed reached the North Pole but the committee were the friends of Peary and funded them. Secondly, the investigation is not thorough as the author suggests it was only 2 days investigation and peary himself says that they did not examine very thoroughly. So, the declaration from the National Geographic Society was biased and not trustworthy.
Second, the author explains that it is possible to reach the North Pole in 37 days as the Avery did in less than 37 days than it is possible for Peary to reach the North Pole in 37 days too. However, the professor refutes this by saying, the Avery and Peary conditions were not similar they have different circumstances. The Avery did use the same sled but he did not have that much weight as the Peary had because the helicopter drops the food so his sled doesn't weigh that much as much the Peary sled was. Hence, the Peary speedy expedition cannot support the claims he makes.
Third, the author suggests that Peary has photographs which were one of the proof that he reached the North Pole. By measuring the shadow from the sun's positions in the photographs they got an idea that he indeed had reached the North Pole. On the other hand, the professor opposes by saying that the photographs were 100 years old. They were faded, blurry, and not able to see the shadow properly. As the measuring needs accuracy to calculate the shadow in the picture so can locate the sun positions. Consequently, the Peary photographs were not clear and could not able to calculate precisely. It indicates that the calculation was not reliable and Peary did not reach the North Pole.
