TPO 42 - solutions to prevent injuries to birds
The reading and lecture discuss how businesses can use to avert injuries to birds. The reading passage claims that glass is very treacherous for wild birds since they can harm themselves every year when they attempt to fly through glass windows and provide three solutions to prevent this from happening. On the other hand, the lecture casts doubt on the solutions made by the author. She is of the opinion that none of the author solutions inhibit birds from injuries.
First of all, the author states that by replacing regular glass to one-way glass, which is a transparent glass in one direction can prevent birds from injuries. In addition to this, birds will not try to fly through it since they will understand that the glass forms a solid barrier. The professor, in contrast, explains that birds will think from outside that this one-way glass has reflection like mirror, which will be atrocious for them because birds would not understand that mirror and can be hit by it since reflection on this glass can be a reflection of sky or a tree and will unfortunately fly into it.
Next, the author posits that painting colorful lines or other type of designs such as thin stripes painted over the glass will be a good solution for this and people would still be able to see through openings. However, the professor insists that birds could perceive this as open holes and try to fly through them. Moreover, the professor thinks this should not be a good solution as there will be dark inside and people will not be able to see from inside.
Finally, the author asserts that third solution is to build an artificial magnetic field to guide birds away from buildings. Furthermore, this will assist birds navigate in the right direction when they fly. Nevertheless, the lecturer explains that this is true that birds use magnetic field as their guide but only when they travel long distances or when they migrate from cold to warm environment. Birds do not use magnetic field when they take short trips, instead they use their eyes and brightness in order to reach to their destinations. Consequently, this magnetic field will not have much effect on birds.
