The burning mirror
The burning mirror is a device that Greeks could have used to protect themseleves from Roman navy. This mirror was made from apolish copper surface in spesific curved shape. Recently, some controversy has been generated about whether or not ancient Greeks were actually used the burning mirror as a weapon. The reading states that Greek did not use the burning mirror to defend themselves for three possible reasons. However, the speaker argues that none of the points the writer claimed are accuarte.
The first point of dispute is if Greek were capable of making the burning mirror. The lectuere explains that Greeks were technologically advenced to make a such device. This is because they could have used small pices of polished copper material and arrgned them to make a curved large mirror. Thus, the Greeks did not need manufacturs to creat a such device. By contrast, the author is simply content to accept the idea that Greeks were sophisticated enough to produce a parabola shape weapon.
The second controversial issue is about if the burning mirror take a really long time to start a fire on Roman's ships. According to the professor, a burning mirror was not used to start fire on the wooden material of the ships. Ships usually are made from serveral metrials such as pitch which is substantce that use to glue the wooden parts together. Thus, burning mirror can start the fire in a ship within few seconds even if the vehicale was moving. Interestingly, the writer does not conisder the other material that ships were made of and belives that it is not easy to start a fire in ships by using burning mirrors.
The final point of debate is the question of if burning mirror is like flaming arrow. The speaker says that burning mirror is unlike the flaming arrow because Romans were not able to see the fire as they see it with using flaming arrows. Thus, they were not aware of it to put the fire off very quickly. Suprisingly, despite this possible rationale, the author ignores all these possible explanations and convincied that Greeks did not need to use the burning mirror to start a fire in Roman's ships.
