Rituals may be understood as norms or customs that guide human behaviour, especially in the social realm. A ritual may be as simple as saying "Hello!" on picking up the telephone receiver, or as elaborate and complex as a marriage ceremony. Regardless of their form, rituals provide the society with guidelines on how to lead lives and interact with each other.
