The chart below shows the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.
The bar chart illustrates the trends in housing, including a more detailed look at the changes in the ratio of families living in rented housing to owner-occupiers in England and Wales over the span of 83 years from 1918 to 2011.
Looking from an overall perspective, we can see that the gap between rented and owned accommodation was considerable early on, which then narrowed to strike a balance in 1971. However, from that moment on, the gap had widened as the number of households becoming owners had increased.
As for details, the percentage of families choosing rentals had more than halved from around 77 to 35 by the end of the given period, showing an early highest ratio in 1918, a subsequent steady fall to its lowest in 2001 (holding around 30%), and further recovery.
By contrast, the percentage of privately-owned housing went up during the same timescale. Starting from about 22 percent, it reached a peak of nearly 70% in 2001 to slightly decline (about 65%) by the end.
The only exception, however, was 1971 when both rates leveled off at 50 percent.
