Some people believe that certain traditions are the hindrance on the way to progress and they think that we have to unchain ourselves from those customs. While conservative people feel that tradition is the way of life and they should not let it go.
Social evils such as slavery, human sacrifice and untouchability have been practised and justified in name of tradition and culture. Some of these customs still prevail in different parts of the world and others ceased to exist. Social reformers had to put strenuous effort to abolish those customs, which people had followed so fiercely. Older generation created these customs with their limited knowledge about life during that time. But those traditions are proved to be wrong over the period. For example, In many traditions, the woman doesn't have the right to speak or go out. But due to the advancement of society, people understood that everyone should have equal rights. Nevertheless, some people who are ardent believers of their tradition continue to follow old practices. In various parts of the world, we can see many customs which are not acceptable in today's world. We should not follow one tradition blindly, just because our ancestors had followed it. For the betterment of society, we should let go of those traditions and adapt to a new lifestyle.
However, our culture and beliefs have played a key role in moulding the current society. It gave moral value to the people and helped them to lead a good life. Respecting elders, treat everyone with respect are some of the values that we got from our tradition. These values put people together and taught them to live together as a society.
In my opinion, we should put aside those customs which are against the progress of human society. Furthermore, we must give more importance to innovations rather than old traditions.
