Asteroids are large space objects made of rock and ice. There are hundreds of thousands of asteroids in our solar system. Though we often hear ideas about establishing colonies of humans to live and work on our Moon or our neighboring planet, Mars, some think that sending people to an asteroid would actually be the best colonization option for a number of reasons.
The articles states that the sending people to an asteroid is best choice among the ideas living in other planet, and provide three reason for supports. However, the professor explains that this the idea in which sending people to asteroids not only is it impractical, but also has a serious downside. the professor refutes each of the author's reasons.
First, the reading states that the asteroids have lower gravity, thereby landing and taking off the spacecraft is easier than other planet. the professor refutes this point by stating that the low gravity has a certain risk in both mussels and bones mass, it makes loosen the mussels and bones' tissue structures. Despite the fact that the low gravity is suitable in short term, it is a dangerous and leads to the health problem in the long term.
Second, the article claims that the mining in the asteroids would be extremely profitable and a perfect source of these raw materials. However, the professor contends that the availability of mineral in the asteroids is not only factor in assessment of elements and precious metals profitability. also, additional factor specially the cost of conveying such material is important, therefor, if the quantity of mining yields is not big enough, mining would be unprofitable.
Third, the reading avers that the colonization of asteroids is a good option, inasmuch as it would be very easy to reach. the lecturer opposes this point by saying that the asteroids comes close to earth's orbit, although it is easy to reach in coming, the asteroids stay not close to earth's orbit and go far away close to planet such as Mars. by doing so, reaching to the asteroids would be challenging.
