Burning coal in power plants produces a waste product called coal ash, a material that contains small amounts of potentially harmful chemicals. Environmentalists in the United States are concerned about the damage such harmful chemicals may be doing to the environment and suggest that the United States government should create new, much stricter regulations for handling and storing coal ash.
The article states that in the united states, the representatives of power companies believe that the newly imposed roles are unconvincing and might actually have adverse effects and provide three reasons for support. However, the professor explains that the new roles should be much stricter than it was in the past, and refutes each of the author's reasons.
First, the reading states that there was the useful and practical regulation in advance; they illustrated the requirements of using the linear method and specific material to prevent the contaminating of the environment. the professor refutes this points by stating that the old field factory and the farm does not utilize
this material, whereby to avoid contaminating the surrounding environment, all farms such as the new and old firm should be respectful to regulation, being effective regulation notwithstanding, it is not really sufficient.
Second, the article claims that consumers may become concerned that recycled coal ash products are just too dangerous and may stop buying the products by the new rules and concerning the issue thereof. However, the professor contends that recycling rules do not necessarily mean the coal ashes are dangerous; some other material such as faced strict long-term rules, but it has no negative effect on consumer buying this material.
Third, the reading avers that strict new regulations would result in a significant increase( ten times the current costs) in disposal and handling costs for the power companies. The professor opposes this point by saying that it is true that the costs will increase, but it is well worth it; it almost cost 50 billion dollars to companies; if they do the math, they would realize that it is one percent of consumer electricity bills.
