The topic of the reading passage and the lecture discusses the issue of professors who appear on TV as guests on news programs where they give expert commentary on the latest events going on in the world. The author discussed this and explained that these appearances by the professors are of immense benefit to the professors themselves, the universities and even the general public. The lecture given by the professor refutes every point and justification made by the reading passage by presenting valid points about how it disagrees with the opinion of the author of the passage.
In the reading, the author begins by telling us that professors benefit from appearing on television and explained his reason by saying that they acquire reputations as authorities in their respective academic fields. the author emphasized that appearing on Television is a benefit to the professors because they are able to have a much wider audience compared to what they normally have if it was just to be in the campus. He explained that if the professor publishes his/her views in an academic journal for example, the only people who would have access and be able to learn about or appreciate the views are other scholars. That means the people who will read and appreciate it are only scholars but that when the professor appears on Tv, thousands of people outside the school or narrow academic community will have access and be aware of his paper. the professor of the lecture refutes this point and disagrees with the point. In the lecture, the professor states that appearing on television is not good for the image of the professor. He goes on to explain that when a professor appears on Tv, he tends to be seen as someone who is unserious and might not even be invited to important conferences. it will also be difficult for such professor to get funding for important research projects
The author also claims that universities benefit from the professors who appear on the television because in the author's opinion, the universities receive publicity when their professors appear on Television because when people see a knowledgeable faculty member on television, they think more highly of that university. they believe that the university is highly prestigious ir reputable. Again, the lecture believes that there are flaws in this stance. The lecture believes the writers argument is flawed because it is a total waste of time by the professor, the professor waste valuable time which would have otherwise be used by the professor to carry out university work. the lecture states that the time spent by the professor on Tv is time wasted same as the time the professor spends travelling, making up, or even the time spent rehearsing for the television appearance.
Therefore, the lecture disagrees with the reading and believes the university does not really gain since the professor is wasting the time that is meant to be used doing research, meeting students and even doing university business. the lecturer believes the time is being wasted appearing on television.
Another belief that the author hold as regards professors appearing on television is that he believes that the general public also gain from such appearance, the professor in the listening passage is doubtful and refutes the point explaining that the general public gaining from such appearance is a believe that is not clear and even doubtful. the lecturer believes that the host of the television and even viewers are not interested in the academic lecturer or paper presentations. He states that what they want is the title which they are mostly interested in. they are interested in the title even more than the intellectual substance. The lecture refutes the opinion that the author holds on the the public gain from the television appearance.
