To understand the most important characteristics of a society, one must study its major cities.

To study the characteristics of society one must study the traditions deep rooted in society for centuries. Studying major cities won’t be helpful as most of the traditions, unique to society, would be eradicated by cosmopolitanism. Thus to study characteristic of society it is not necessary to study its major cities as there are plethora of factors aberrant to unique characteristic of particular society.

Society is marked by ideologies and traditions unique to it. Major cities don’t adhere to specific traditions as it has people migrating from many parts of the country or world. Considering one of the major city - mumbai, it has people from different states of India as well from other countries following different ideologies. Considering marriage ceremonies, there are Punjabi’s who weighs this ceremony more on celebrations in contrast to South Indians who do it more on ritualistic grounds. There are maharashtrians who celebrate Ganesh festival in contrast to bengali’s who celebrate Durga pooja.

Major cities may also adapt a different life style which is combination of western culture and eastern culture. Thus a new trend would be unique to city and would not match up to the rest of the society. It will have its own culture resulting from confluence of ideas from many groups.

Major cities will be helpful in the study only if it is marked by some heritage which has been preserved till date either as a structure or in museum. Redfort in Delhi, Eiffel tower in Paris, Haji Ali in Mumbai are few of the structures which can give some insights into characteristic of society. As these structures are constructed on social, political and religious grounds they can serve as strong base for study.

In contrast to urban environment, rural areas highly collate the uniqueness of society as it is most likely inhabited by same ethnic group since centuries. Also the historical monuments in the form of temple, mosques, forts etc are abundant in non urban areas and can be explored to study more about the society cohabiting it.

To study characteristic of society one need to explore places with its origin. As a result of globalization, immigration of people and confluence of ideas has grown to such an extent that major cities no more stands as a base of society culture, but in fact only serve as an example of technical prowess.
