Model of a painting

Essay topics:

Model of a painting

Both the reading and the lecture discuss an unknown model for the painting of Johannes Vermeer's "Girl with a Pearl Earring". The writer postulates several theories about the actual figure being portrayed in the painting of Vermeer and provides three hypotheses to endorse its idea. However, the professor states although the model is unrevealed, the provided theories are not true and gainsays each of them.

First and foremost, the passage begins by asserting that the first candidate is Maria Vermeer. Since Vermeer found the source of inspiration in daily life, he depicted the reflection of daily scenes of his daughter's life. So, his daughter must have been posed for the painting. On the other hand, the professor explains his interest in daily life scenes does not mean that he chose his daughter as a subject. His other 40 pieces of art contain figures as a subject, for instance, man and woman, maids, and the mistress also occurred as models. Therefore, it is not clear how the model is.

Next, the professor further explains the details that in the 17th century the status and likeliness of the figure were also shown in the picture. Moreover, the social class and pride of people were also depicted. If the daughter of Vermeer's patron was the model, Van Ruijven would have asked him to show her as an upscale figure. These claims refute the writer's implication about Magdalena Van Ruijven being the model because Vermeer gifted her that painting as a wedding gift.

Ultimately, the article wraps its argument by declaring the tronie theory that people used tronie genre in their paintings to show the imaginary figures in the 17th century. In contrast, the speaker refutes this point by showing the inaccuracy of the author that it was not the style of Vermeer to draw facial imaginory expressions. His other paintings revealed his realistic observations
