The graph illustrates the proportion of the population aged 65 and above for the USA, Sweden, and Japan over a century from 1940 to 2040.
Overall, the trend is, the proportion of the population aged 65 is increasing for all the three countries. Moreover, Japan and Sweden had followed the same level of increase till 1980 and from then on increased in populace is varied much for both countries. Japan had a very less populace aged 65 and above in 1980 compared to the other two countries and this is likely to reverse in 2040, where Japan will have more populace aged 65 and above in 2040 compared to Sweden and the USA.
To elaborate, In 1940 Japan had 5 percent of its population aged 65 and above, whereas Sweden and the USA were around 7 and 9 percent proportion of their populace aged 65 and above. While the USA and Sweden have a gradual increase in their proportion of populace aged 65 and above, Japan’s proportion of populace aged 65 and above had declined till 1960, remained constant till 1990, then started raising till 2040. During 1980 -2000 there was not much proportion change of population aged 65 and above in the USA and it was around 15% of its populace. Opposing to declining or staying constant, Sweden’s populace aged 65 and above increased thoroughly.
