The first chart below shows the results of a survey which sampled a cross-section of 100,000 people asking if they traveled abroad and why they traveled for the period 1994-98.
The second chart shows their destinations over the same period.

The table describes how many people did a journey in the years between 1994 and 1998 and it classifies the data reported by sorting the different trips according to the purposes of the travellers. The bar chart below displays the how the choices of destinations have changed during the same time range.
Overall, the number of individuals who went outside the UK have been growing over the 5-year period and Western Europe has always been the favourite destination, with a significant advantage over North America and Other Areas.
Looking at the first figures, it is noticeable that the only decrease the total had throughout the years was experienced between 1994 and 1995, when the number of abroad permanences due to holidays decreased by 400 units. However, after this little drop, the toll have begun to rise again steadly, to rich a peak in 1998 with 28,828 travels. Holiday, business and visits to friend and relatives categories experienced an increase, whereas the number travel for other reasons remained almost stable at quota 985.
Moving to the second graph, it is relevant to notice that the trend related to travel to Western Europe followed the trend of total holiday, with a low point in 1995 followed by a gradual rise lasted until 1998. Travels to North America and Other Areas are minor and count always over 14,000 passenger less than European trips.
