write a story about people who inspires you
It remains remarkable to me that a story of a 23-year old guy – who is totally of a different stripe – could have such an immense impact on me that it changed my life forever. In 2018, Yuzuru Hanyu had made history as he successfully defended his Olympic Champion title in a state of severe injury, which provoked never-ending torrents of thrill in the Figure Skating world. And his journey from the hospital bed to the highest position of the podium would forever embed in me, as a statue of a miracle how adversities could barely daunt a fearless human.
It all started at the beginning of the 2017-2018 season of winter sports. This season could be deemed as a once-in-a-lifetime since the three grandiose competitions of figure skating would be held in only a 4-month period. And Yuzuru Hanyu was also at his very best: he had been undefeatable for 2 years, ranked at the top-tier in the field with countless gold medals. He proudly entered the season with 2 wins, remaining serene and somehow laid-back until a disaster violently struck upon him. Whilst he was too immersed in attempting a quadruple jump, ( a jump with 4 rotations in the air, considered the most challenging and risky act on ice) he failed to land and drastically smashed his ankle on the ice. His face puckered in dire pain as he writhed on the ice. As swift as it happened, he was immediately brought off the stadium to the treatment institute and remained silent for the next 2 months. It was anticipated that it would take him 2-3months at least to be hospitalized and up to that point, the season would have been well over. For those who had been fascinated by the games and especially athlete Hanyu, it was indeed a nightmare throwing us into great despair and concern, but little did we know that was the beginning of a momentous milestone.
Just one month before the Olympic Games, Yuzuru Hanyu was back to the media. He firmly claimed that he would once again attempt the Olympics and definitely would go for a win. But it all seemed ridiculous as he was then under treatment with painkillers, which made it nearly impossible to stand a chance against any other spectacular skaters. His fans, including me, fell into an emotional paradox. We longed to watch him performs at the Games and wins, yet we doubt if that could ever happen in such a disadvantageous situation. Nevertheless, in the end, we placed our faith in him.
On the 9th of February, Yuzuru Hanyu once again showed up at the Olympics, determining to win it at all cost. In the meantime, I was watching the competition through live stream, constantly praying for him in anxiety and nervousness. “YUZURU HANYU, REPRESENTING JAPAN!” – loudly announced the host of the competition, and Yuzuru – after hugging his coach for luck – entered the ice rink. Even though I was just viewing through live streaming, I could easily sense immense tension in the stadium. Every spectator there ( mostly Yuzuru’s fans) was holding the breath in immobility. The strain was rising with a fast pace; however, Yuzuru seemed somehow calm and serene – like he was ready to give what it took. Music cued, and the blades started to slide. He began with some step-sequences, displaying his infamous skating skills that barely anyone had ever possessed. But next up would be risky: the first quadruple jump. He vigorously threw himself in the air rotated with a crazy speed. Would he land it perfectly? Would he? And I screamed in bliss and excitement! He made it! And yet the performance went on as the second jump coming: he got that as well! Then came a series of his iconic movements: Ina Bauer and Hydro-blading – all were beautifully executed. Sliding through the second half of the performance: he barely made any mistakes so far, but it was the second half that mattered. I was still patiently praying while he embarked on the third and fourth quads – and how on earth: he perfectly landed them all! I could not contain myself from screaming at the top of my lungs along with the spectators! The fun part began as he playfully executed all the step-sequences with the music echoed vibrantly. The crowd went wild and started clapping to the music. “What a scene!” – thought me. I sensed a cheerful and vigorous vibe spreading all around when the performance was reaching its climax. And the moment Yuzuru Hanyu stomped his foot on the ice as the sign of the end: a shower of teddy bears and gifts was raining on him. The fans were throwing flowers and presents on to the ice, celebrating his god-like performance. And at the moment, we all knew, that he already firmly grasped the gold medal in his hand.
The 2018 Olympics ended with miracles, as always. The 23-year-old Japanese Skater: Yuzuru Hanyu, who was born with asthma and experienced oodles of injuries, remained dauntless as he joyfully stood on the podium with the gold medal dazzling on his chest. This victory so far is the most marvelous phenomenon that ever happened in the history of figure skating, which also has altered my life for the better. Back in the day, when I was heavily depressed with school work, Yuzuru was there to save me. By overcoming all the obstacles and hardships and endeavoring for the best; he had motivated me to continue to try. Of course, I would make mistakes nevertheless; of course, I would fail countless times; yet so long as I have the guts to keep moving forward, good things will come my way; as he famously said: “Striving could be ineffective, but never goes to waste”.
