genetic modification
The reading and the lecture both discuss about the genetic modification on trees. The author of the article claims that genetic modification creates trees that produce more fruit, grow faster and can withstand adverse conditions. However, the lecturer disputes the claims by finding the problems accossiate with the benefits.
According to the reading, the genetically modified trees are hardier than natural trees. He explains the point by providing the example of the new pest-resistance species of the papaya tree in Hawaii, where the genetic modification ends the problem of ringspot virus infaction and saves the native papaya-tree population. However, the lecturer challenges the arguments by providing the example of the natural resistance of the plants which successivly retain the plants in nature for years. He further points out that genetic modified trees are uniform in nature and have no resistance for the unknown conditions like climate change or pest invasions which will lead the wiped out of the entire species.
Secondly, the author mentions the economic benefits of the modified trees as they grow faster, give more food, fruits or other products. In constract, the lecturer contends that company charged for genetic modified seeds and by laws, farmers have to pay the company every times they plant a modified seed. He posists that it will ultimately increase the cost of products.
Finally, the author suggests that the genetically modified trees can prevent the over use of wild trees by meeting the demand for firewood or building timber as they tend to grow faster than the wild trees. The lecturer completely disagree with this point as the genetic modified trees grow aggressively which out compete the natural resources necessary for the growth of wild trees. Furthermore, he claims that tthese trees in the wild going to overcrowed the place and going to wipe out the rare or unique species.
