Altruism is a type of behavior in which an animal sacrifices its own interest for that of
another animal or group of animals. Altruism is the opposite of selfishness; individuals
performing altruistic acts gain nothing for themselves.
The reading and the lecture are both about altruistic behaviors in humans and animals. The author of the article feels that both humans and animals show altruistic behaviors in various forms. The lecture disputes the claims made by the article. His position is that the behaviors described by the author are not necessarily altruistic but it can even have some hidden selfishness.
According to the reading, humans show altruistic behavior by actions such as sharing of food and donating organs with their family or even stranger humans. The article mentions that such acts are altruistic as they have little incentive to the giver and is beneficial to the receiver. The lecturer challenges this specific argument. She claims that while these act may seem selfless because of no apparent gain to the human, the sharing human actually has some immaterial gains. For example, the act of donating organs to someone will certainly shower the donor with appreciations and approval from their circles. Additionally, she points out that this will lead to a increase in their feeling of self worth.
Secondly, the author suggests that Meerkats show altruism by having a individual meerkat look over the possible danger for other meerkats. In the article, it is said that the sentiner meerkat looks over any approaching prey or danger and alerts other members of its group who have gone to collect food. The lecturer, however, asserts that the sentinel meerkat might not be doing this selflessly. For instance, the lecturer posits that the meerkat in lookout feeds itself before going out so it is already full. Moreover, it stays close to the burrow so it can escape easily. She goes on to say that the alarm sound made by the meerkat can either cause the other members to either group or disperse which leads the attention of the prey from itself towards the group. So, the acts of the sentinel meerkat might not be completely altruistic.
In conclusion, the author describes the habits of humans and animals that seem altruistic but the lecturer challenges these claims and instead maintain that the act are not really altruistic but instead only seem that way.
