The given line chart illustrates the number of foreign students and domestic students applying for universities in Australia from 2001 to 2010.
Overall, it is clear that there was an increasing demand for Australian university education by overseas students. Meanwhile, the number of commencing Australian students fluctuated throughout the period. In addition, more local students applied for the universities than overseas students.
In 2001, the total number of local students was the highest, with 40,000 students, which doubled that of the foreign students. The quantity of Australian commencing students was about 18,000, roughly 1,000 higher than the figure for overseas freshmen.
From 2001 to 2010, more students who were born outside Australia enrolled in the universities, with its figure rocketed to around 80,000 students. Similarly, the total number of local students soared before staying unchanged at 60,000 students. In contrast, the figure for native beginners at universities remained low with a slight fluctuation, meanwhile, that for foreign commencing students grew steadily and peaked at 40,000 students.
