The diagram shows the design of a modern landfill for household waste. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
The presented diagram illustrates the structural design of a contemporary landfill which can be used to accommodate the waste produced by households.
Overall, designing a landfill requires three steps to follow and an area far away from human residence. Design commences with the construction of a big hole in the ground and ends with its closure.
First of all, the construction process starts with digging up a big hole in the ground. It is made sure that the lower end of this hole is supported by natural rocks. Next, this man-made hole is internally lined with clay and some artificial substance. Following this, a network of drain pipes is laid down at the bottom of the hole and also provided with a drainage tank.
After the completion of its construction, the next step is its usage. In this particular step, the hole is filled up with domestic waste. When it gets filled by the waste, the waste-liquid gets collected by the drainage tank constructed at the bottom. For closure, a thick layer of clay is laid on top of it and an opening is left out for the extraction of gases released by the organic waste.
