TOEFL integrated writing: Chevalier de Seingalt
For a long time, there has been debate on the accuracy of the historical the Chevalier de Seingalt's memoir. The writer of the passage while noting the memoir's valuable historical significance, raises doubt on its accuracy due to several reasons. The lecturer quickly refutes these claims providing proofs explained further below.
To begin with, the writer of the passage states that newly found evidence suggests that the Chevalier was not as wealthy as he claimed to be in his memoir as he borrowed money from a Swiss merchant. The lecturer obviously doesn't agree with author. She explains that the wealth the Chevalier owned were mostly assets which couldn't be used to pay for the parties and gambling he used to spend on. Thus until the assets wold be converted into cash, he had borrowed the money from the Swiss merchant. THis refutes the claim that the Chevalier was poor.
The author of the passage further adds that it is impossible for anyone to accurately capture their conversations from the many years later. He agrees that the conversations between the Chevalier and Voltaire undoubtedly happened, however, their is no evidence how accurately they are noted. The lecturer easily refutes the author's claim by providing proof that the Chevalier wrote down the conversations between him and Voltaire. In fact, when the memoir was written he referred to these note that he had safely, and, this has been confirmed by the witnesses living with the Chevalier many years later.
To conclude his stance the author adds on that the incident of his escape from the Venetican prison is overly dramatic and seems to be added for readers to enjoy. He believes that the Chevalier never actually made a daring escape but infact bribed his politically powerful friends and escaped. Not all experts agree with this theory. The lecturer points out that other prisoners of the jail had much more politically powerful friends and yet were unable to escape the prison. She also brings to our attention the old records of the Venetican government which states that the jail roof of which the Chevalier was in had to be repaired thus proving the written incident was indeed true.
Thus we can clearly understand that the author of the passage and lecturer are unable to find a common ground.
