Asteroids are large space objects made of rock and ice. There are hundreds of thousands of asteroids in our solar system. Though we often hear ideas about establishing colonies of humans to live and work on our Moon or our neighboring planet, Mars, some think that sending people to an asteroid would actually be the best colonization option for a number of reasons.
Low Gravity
To begin with, asteroids are often much smaller than planets, so they have lower gravity. When landing a spaceship, the craft would not be pulled as strongly or as forcefully toward the asteroid's surface, making the landing safer than landing on the Moon or Mars; it would also allow a spacecraft to carry much more equipment needed to set up the colony. It would also be easier for the spacecraft to take off again, so the spaceship would need to carry considerably less fuel for the trip back to Earth.
Mining Valuable Metals
Next some asteroids are rich in valuable elements and precious metals that are relatively rare on Earth, such as gold and platinum. An asteroid colony would be extremely profitable and a good source of these raw materials. The colonists or businesses sponsoring them could more than pay for the cost of their support by mining minerals and sending them back to Earth.
Easy to Reach
Finally, asteroids are a good option for colonization because some of them would be very easy to reach. There are a number of asteroids that periodically come within or near Earth's orbit Some of them actually get closer to Earth than our Moon. So these asteroids would be much easier and more affordable to get to and get back from than a planet like Mars, which would require a two-year trip in each direction.
The reading and lecture are both about the colonization of the asteroids. The author of the reading presents, three theories supporting the idea that, the asteroids are more feasible for the colonization, as compared to the planets like Mars and satellite like Moon. The lecturer disputes the claims made in the article. His position is that, they are all incorrect.
According to the reading, the gravity of the asteroids are less compared to other options, thus less pull is exerted by the spacecraft during the landing process, making the landing safe. The article mentions that, it will be relatively easy for aircraft to take off, due to less fuel consumption The lecturer challenged this specific claims made in the article. He claims that, low gravity causes the decrease in the muscle mass and also signification amount of reduction of bone density, which presents serious health hazard to colonizers. Additionally, he points out that, long term exposure to the low gravity exacerbates the health condition.
Secondly, the article suggest, asteroids are rich is rare and valuable materials, thus making it profitable source for mining the raw materials required in the Earth. The lecturer however asserts that, the cost of funding the support of the colony in asteroid and transport of the mined materials are significantly high, reducing the profit margin. She goes on to say that, if the large quantity of rare metals are minded and transported, it will fluctuate the supply and demand value, making it readily available will only cause the value of such rare metals to decrease, lowering the price.
Finally, the author posits that, asteroids are each to reach to; they periodically get closer to the Earth orbit as compared to the Mars and Moon. The author contends that, since asteroids are easy to get in and get out from, making it feasible for colonization. In contrast, the lecturer stance is even though the asteroid comes closure to the Earth, it eventually goes farther away, as a result, getting back from the asteroids to Earth is challenging, thus making it not so viable option for the colonization.
