Chevening is looking for individuals with strong professional relationship-building skills, who will engage with the Chevening community and influence and lead others in their chosen profession. Please explain how you build and maintain relationships in a professional capacity, using clear examples of how you currently do this, and outline how you hope to use these skills in the future. (minimum word count: 100 words; maximum word count: 500 words)

I believe that building a strong network is necessary for professional success regardless of the career that one is in. From my own personal experience, I have come to discover that a strong and expansive network is invaluable as it provides you with insight into different trends in the professional world, in addition to giving you access to insider information on job vacancies. Moreover, there is so much one can learn just by interacting with people in different fields. For example, I have learnt so much from computer scientists that I have networked with, and this has allowed me to improve in the use of some application softwares. After all, knowledge is power
and one of the best ways of gaining knowledge is simply by interacting with people who are more knowledgeable than you.
During my undergraduate studies, as an executive of the biological sciences department, this gave me the opportunity to interact with lecturers through its various activities such as departmental orientation and seminars. For example, during my research project laboratory work, I decided to request the help of one the lecturers (Mrs Omolola Ajayi) who helped me when I was having issues isolating pure culture of microorganisms which were always giving mixed culture results, fortunately for me she was also doing her post-graduate research work so this served as a medium of exchanging ideas. Also, through regular communication with my project supervisor on phone and mails, he has mentored me on my career. Thanks to my proactiveness and inquisitiveness, he informed me of the Chevening scholarship as a source of funding my Masters studies in UK.

Social media networking has personally proven to be one of the most effective ways of building and maintaining relationships with long time friends, colleagues. For example, Social Networks served as a platform where the 2016 sets of Zenith secondary school met ourselves and organised a get together party in August, 2019 which in turn created a face to face networking avenue to meet with colleagues I hardly interacted with over the years. Personally, I like social media because I feel it's the first step towards discovering professionals in the fastest, most convenient, and affordable way. LinkedIn, in particular, has been such an indispensable platform that allows me to connect with professionals from my field and other professions as well and also get job information.

Lastly, I am currently improving my leadership skills by volunteering to do some jobs using this means as a way of communicating with leading staffs so as to influence a chance to be employed after my service year and when I leave for my graduate studies.

In conclusion, I hope to engage with the Chevening community during and after my studies and also influence and lead other students in having a successful studies.
