(minimum word count: 100 words; maximum word count: 500 words)
I believe that building a strong network is necessary for professional success regardless of one's career. Knowledge is power and one of the best ways of gaining knowledge is simply by interacting with people who are more knowledgeable than one.
There are ways I have been using so as to build and maintain the relationship of my professional capacity as a student and youth corper and these are few:
During my undergraduate studies, as an executive of the biological science department, this gave me the opportunity to interact with lecturers through its various activities such as departmental orientation and seminars. For example, during my research project laboratory work, I decided to request the help of one the lecturers (Mrs Omolola Ajayi) who helped me when I was having issues isolating pure culture of microorganisms which were always giving mixed culture results, fortunately for me she was also doing her post-graduate research work so this served as a medium of exchanging ideas. Also, through regular communication with my project supervisor on phone and mails after graduation, he helped me with the publication of my research project work and also mentored me on my career. Thanks to my proactiveness and inquisitiveness, he informed me of the Chevening scholarship as a source of funding my Masters studies in UK.
The use of social media is another method of building and maintaining professional capacity. This involve the use of facebook, WhatsApp, tweeter, LinkedIn and Instagram to mention a few. Social media is the first step towards discovering professionals in the fastest, most convenient, and affordable way. LinkedIn, in particular, has been such an indispensable platform that allows me to connect with professionals from my field and other professions as well and also get job information. An example is when I was in search for a Primary place of assignment for my national youth service, LinkedIn created the opportunity to apply for different job vacancies, share with other Corps member and those in search of an internship placement thus, creating networks of people with a common goal.
In addition, social media networking has personally proven to be one of the most effective ways of building and maintaining relationships with long time friends/colleagues. For example, Social networks served as a platform where the 2016 sets of Zenith secondary school met ourselves and organised a reunion party in August 2019 which in turn created a face to face networking avenue to meet with colleagues I hardly interact with over the years.
Lastly, I am currently improving my leadership skills by volunteering to do some jobs using this means as a way of communicating with leading staffs so as to influence a chance to be employed after my service year and when I leave for my graduate studies.
In conclusion, I hope to engage in Chevening community during and after my studies and also influence and lead other students to achieve a successful academic period.
