A variety of carp are native to Asia, including the bighead and silver carp. More than forty years ago, several species of Asian carp were imported to the southern US to control algae in fish farms.
The lecture discusses the controversy surrounding Asian carp in the Great Lakes water system. Disputing the passage's argument that the government should shut down shipping locks in the Chicago area to prevent this invasive species, the professor cites several reasons showing that the shutdown is not necessary.
First, the professor says that the DNA traces in the water near Lake Michigan is insufficient to indicate the existence of a large-scale Asian carp population. The government argues that the DNA technique is unable to give the exact number of living species in this area. Consequently, it is unwise to regard these data as reliable information.
Second, she says that the passage's claim that Asian carp is an imminent hazard may be exaggerated. In general, imported species can only survive in a self-sustaining way if they have achieved a particular number in an environment. Moreover, more than 90 percent of exotic species fail to surpass this threshold, thus disappearing very quickly. Therefore, there is no need to worry about the threat posed by Asian carp unless they come in large numbers and have found habitats to lay eggs.
Third, the professor contradicts the passage regarding the issue of economic impact. She maintains that the locks are the essential elements for local industry and society in plenty of different aspects, such as commercial shipping, recreational activities, and security. Closing the locks will directly affect these activities, while the impact on the fishery industry is still unclear. Hence, the government should not make the decision based on the untenable calculation of fishery industry loss.
