The picture below shows how a hot balloon works.
The diagram illustrates different parts in the structure of a hot air balloon and its operation.
Overall, there consist of four major components to form a hot air balloon, namely the envelope, the skirt, the burners and the basket. It is also clear that the balloon is supplied with hot air in order to make it fly.
In terms of the construction, the balloon, which is one of the main parts, is called an envelope made of different layers of gores and panels. While there is a parachute valve at the top functioning as a self-sealing flap, a skirt is attached to the bottom of the balloon which is connected to the basket with strong ropes. The basket provides seats for passengers and enough space for two propane cylinders. Above the basket, there are two burners used to release air into the envelope to make it rise to the sky.
With regard to how the balloon operates, the mixture of propane and the air produces flame to fill the balloon with the hot air via the burners, at which point the hot air inside is lighter than the cold air outside and the whole structure floats upwards. In order to descend, the valve at the top is left open so that the hot air can escape at a controlled rate.
