The given bar chart illustrates the proportion of owned household and rented ones in England and Wales during the period of over 90 years.
It is clear that renting households in 1918 was favoured by inhabitants of England and Wales, whereas the year 2001 saw the highest percentage of owing households. It is noticeable that both of these types of accommodations significantly fluctuated during the period mentioned.
As we can see from the chart, from 1918 to 1961, the number of rented households was far higher than owned ones. In particular, about 78% of household were owned, while the rented accommodations accounted for only around 21% in 1918. In the next 40 years, the number of people buying households considerably decreased by 59% in 1961, by contrast, there was a significant increase in the percentage of the rented (41% in 1961). Meanwhile, in 1971, the figure for these types were equal.
Talking to the year 1981, the proportions of the owned and the rented were 40% and 60% respectively. The next 30 years saw a slight rise in the number of rented accommodations, by 69% in 2001, this surpassed the figure for owned households. However, in 2011, the number of English and Wales buying household minimally climbed by 36%, meanwhile, the rented ones slightly fell by 65%.
