The main topic of both the reading and the lecture is the Plain of Jars. The reading suggests three theories about the function of the jars. However, the lecturer refutes the reading's opinions citing three reasons which will be illustrated in the susequent paragraphs.
First of all, according to the reading, the jars could be utilized for fermentation. Nevertheless, the lecturer opposses this idea and contends that building stone jars is hard and time consuming, and, on the other hand, clay jars could be used for the same purpose. He goes on to say that clay jars were easier to built as well. Thus, with this in mind, it is unlikely that stone jars were used for fermentation.
Secondly, the author argues that since Laos sometimes underwent drought, the jars could be used as water containers to provide water needed for merchants and traders who passed ancient trade routes. Conversely, the speaker claims that there were some rivers and streams adjacent to the routes. Therefore, ancient people did not need to construct water containers.
Finally, the reading claims that because the jars were huge, they could be used as tombs. The author says that the objects found in the jars are valuable and since it was a custome to bury the dead near priceless items, these jars were tombs. In contrast, the lecturer asserts that tombs needed some cover to protect the dead person but, there was no cover found on or near the jars. Hence, this theory can not be valid.
