Do you agree or disagree with the following statement:
"Computers are being used more and more in education and some people believe there will soon be no role for the teacher in education."
In this day and age, the development of technology is changing the world in every corner of it and education is not an exception. The growing application of computers into teaching strategies has benefited the educators a lot which leads to a major belief that the role of teachers in education will be replaced by computers in the near future. In my point of view, computers in particular and other technological devices in general cannot take the place of teachers in the class due to some following reasons.
Firstly, human teachers surpass computers in terms of teaching skills. In fact, one of the most prominent characteristics that set humans apart from computers is the ability to master such skills as problem-solving skills, creativity, and interpersonal skills whereas computers are only pre-programmed machines that do repetitive tasks and they do not show any sense of creativity. Moreover, rather than merely teaching lessons at school, human teachers can also teach their students how to be a good citizen in different approaches while computers can only impart the knowledge from the textbooks.
Secondly, interaction is necessary in class which can only be achieved in classes that are under control of human teachers. In classes managed by human teachers, students will have opportunities to contact their teachers to get their questions answered, to be inspired, and to have a good relationship with the teachers. However, in classes regulated by computers or robots, students can only receive the knowledge without any connection with the teachers and this can somehow affect the learning spirit of students.
The proponents of using computers in education reckon that these machines are much more efficient than humans because they are much faster than humans and they can provide lots of information due to the easy access to the knowledge of humankind through the Internet. This point is true to some extent, however, computers and other counterparts have no analytic skills, which means they can not assess the real capability of the students or cater to the needs of individual students.
In conclusion, human teachers can not be replaced by computers due to the lack of computers’ interaction and ability to teach skills. Therefore, the government and other authorities should invest money and effort in improving the qualifications of the present and future teachers instead of using computers to substitute them.
