The bar chart illustrates the percentage of households owning and renting accommodation in England and Wales from 1981 to 2011.
At first glance, at the beginning of the chart, the percentage of households in rented accommodation significantly outweighed the one in owned accommodation. However, at the middle of the period, both figures reached the equivalent quantity. From 1981 to the end of the chart, the households in owned accommodation outraced the rented accommodation.
Firstly, in 1981, the households in rented settlement pattern was at the highest point at around 78% while the one in owned home was only about 23%. From 1918 to 1961, there were some fluctuations in rented accommodation percentage but generally the figure showed a downward trend and dropped by approximately 20%. Whereas, the owned settlement increased stably to over 40% in 1961. In 1971, both patterns remained same percentage at 50%. Nevertheless, from 1981 to 2011, while the households amount in owned accommodation represents an significant upward trend and inclined to nearly 65%. On the other hand, the other figure fell to about 36% at the end.
In summary, both patterns experienced some fluctuations but the chart showed a reverse trend of both percentage of households in owned accommodation and the rented one.
