The line graph illustrates changes in the number of visits to and from Britain between 1979 and 1999, while the bar chart compares the top five visited countries by the UK residents in 1999.
Over the period, there were much more trips from the UK than to it. In the beginning of the period, both categories were reported to have similar indexes of around ten million visits. These numbers were rising steadily until 1986 when they reached marks of twenty million and twelve million travels respectively. After that, they started to grow at a rapid pace. In 1999, the final number of visits abroad by UK residents exceeded fifty million, while the number of foreign visits to the UK was slightly under thirty million.
Regarding the most popular destinations, Turkey, Greece, the USA, Spain and France were the most common places for journeys. Nevertheless, Spain and France had the highest marks of nine and eleven million trips respectively. Meanwhile, the USA, Greece and Turkey were almost three times lower, under five million with Turkey having the lowest number of approximately two million.
Overall, there were much more British tourists travelling abroad with Spain and France as most common places to visit than incoming foreign tourists.
