Essay topics:

Humans have been battling the tropical disease malaria since at least the late fourth century B.C. This debilitating and deadly disease is actually a parasite which reproduces in humans and is spread through the saliva of mosquitoes when they suck blood from humans. While there is still no cure for malaria, there are three main strategies that we hope will lead to the eradication of this disease which kills nearly half a million people around the world each year.

The first strategy is to fight the malaria parasite itself by treating patients with powerful prescription medicines. Patients are tested to determine which strain of the malaria parasite is present, as different areas of the world have different strains of the parasite. Then, an effective medicine is administered to combat the symptoms of the infection.

The second strategy is to kill the mosquitoes that transfer the parasite to humans. Killing the adult mosquitoes using chemical sprays is a common option, but the larvae of the mosquitoes can also be killed where they develop, in pools of warm, still water. These larvae can be killed using chemicals, but another popular approach is to release fish into the water that prey on the larvae such as guppies to eat the larvae before they mature into adults.

The third strategy is called the sterile insect technique. "Sterile" means the insect cannot reproduce. This strategy involves breeding and hatching millions of mosquitoes, sterilizing the males with low-level gamma rays, and then releasing them into the wild population. Females that mate with the sterile males produce eggs which do not hatch, and this causes the mosquitoes to die out. This strategy has been effective in wiping out a number of insect pests including the screw-worm and several types o

The artcle introduces various ways to eradicate Malaria, a deadly disease spread through mosquitoes carrying the parasites. The author suggests three ways to eradicate the deadly disease. But the speaker holds strong opposition in the author's opnion and tries to shut down all the points made in the reading passage.

Firstly, the author explains strong medication can be given to treat various starins of the parasite after identifying the particular strain. But the lecturer finds flaws in the authors opinion and points out that there are no drugs to cure Malaria. He also says that they adapt and become immune to the drugs with which we treat them by giving examples of the medications like chloroquine and methyloquine which were very popular medicines against the disease long back and also says that now the parasite became immune to these drugs.

Secondly, the author states that killing mosquitoes using chemical sprays can stop the transfer of parasite to humans which stops the disease from spreading. The writer also states that the larvae of the mosquitoes also can be killed by spraying chemicals or releasing fishes like guppies into the water where larvae are developes. However, the speaker holds his firm by saying that there are a lot of mosquitoes and larvae out there, so there is no possibilty of eliminating all the insects.

Finally, the writer posits by stating that sterile insect technique can be used to wipe out the insects. According to this technique, male mosquitoes are sterilised with low-level gamma rays and then release them into the wild. When females mate with these males the eggs produced do not hatch. The speaker however doubts this technique. He says that the sterilised males have somehow lost the ability to properly mate with females. Therefore no eggs are poroduced to be hatched. He also says that the females mate with the other males and produce eggs.

To sum up, the author and the professor in the listening have conflicting views on eradicating Malaria. We can infer that it is hard to find a common ground for them
