The lecture and the reading are both about a famous man in ancient Rome, Spartacus. The author of the reading tells three stories, which make the man a hero. However, the lecturer casts doubts on all of the stories, she thinks they are all inaccurate.
Firstly, according to the reading, Spartacus and his men were fighting for a chance to return to their homeland. This argument is challenged by the lecturer. She points out that, actually, there were a lot of opportunities for them to stop the wars and return home, while they did not catch. Besides, she thinks they also conquered cities for revenge and wealth.
Secondly, the author contends that the reason why Spartacus was so great in history is that he was a brilliant leader who destroyed the Roman army with a relatively weak army. Unfortunately, that's not the truth. The lecturer says the only reason for his victories was that the Rome government did not take him seriously. As a rustly, Spartacus immediately failed when the Rome government sent its strongest army.
At last, the author holds an opinion that Spartacus was also fighting for the liberation of all slaves. The author goes on to say that Spartacus and his men refused a chance to stop the wars and to liberate themselves only, because they were keen to free all slaves. But the lecturer points out that it's just a fictional story written by 18th European thinkers and play writers. They chose Spartacus to be the hero who could bring inspiration to all humans who lived in that time.
