The line graph compares statistics on the percentage of joblessness in the age range 16 to 24 over a period of 20 years from 1993 in England.
It is clear that the proportion of unemployed young adults consistently overtook the proportion of the older age bracket over the period shown. However, both adult groups in London revealed overall figures higher than those in the rest of England.
In 1993, a modest 17% of English 16 to 24-year-olds living outside London were without work, and the data on those living inside London was 5% higher, at 22%. During the same period, the figure for the overall population in the capital, at 15%, compared to about 10% of those in the rest of England. Whereas there was a steady drop in levels of unemployment over the following 10 years, the 16-24 age profile saw a significant rise years later. It is noticeable that adults living outside the capital were by far the smallest rate as a whole.
By 2012, while young adults in London had climbed considerably and reached a peak of 20%, there had been a constant rise in the unemployment rates of this age group living in the rest of England since the 2002s, to nearly 21%. In contrast, people without work in the capital and the rest of the country had fallen to below 10%, approximately 9% and 8% respectively. Interestingly, the biggest gap between the two age groups in the rate of joblessness was clearly seen in London.
