Both the reading and the listening talk about whether selling Amtrak is right or not. The former suggests three explanations why the US government must sell it to private institutions. The professor, on the other hand, casts doubt on this idea by saying that it is not a good idea to sell Amtrak Company due to the following reasons.
First of all, both the author and the lecture posit Amtrak underuse routes. The passage mentions that officials lose money because there are routes which has no enough passengers to compensate for the cost of maintaining those areas. The lecturer, in contrast, rebuts it by pointing out that losing money because of underused routes is not understandable. She adds that government offers transport services not to make profit, but to some remote areas to help them commute easily. Therefore, though it is underused and expensive to support it, but it is the right of citizens to get access to these governmental services like those who access to more accessible transportation systems.
Second of all, both the writer and the professor put forward official funding of Amtrk Company. The text explains that due to the support of government with regard to this train service, its tickets are cheaper making airline industry less competitive. The speaker, conversely, refutes the idea by positing that this proposition is silly. Accordingly, the officials support US airlines too. In fact, the United State government funds air traffic control tower and air control officers to make flying safe. Actually, private airlines couldn't exist without the support of the officials.
Third, both the article and the speaker put forth whether it is better to fund car travel or rail service. The writer avers that Amtrak transports only 1 percent of the individuals commuting between cities and many people who travel intercity, use their own cars requiring government's attention. The listening, however, rejects this by mentioning that people don't use train services because US trains are out of date. If they make it fast, people will use them. According to her, if US government invests in this kind of services, like Japan and Europe did, people will use high speed train line as well. So, the government should allocate more money to improve it.
