The reading passage and the lecture are both about the use of the government-owned train named Amtrak. While the critics in the reading suggest that it should be sold to a private company, the lecturer completely disagrees with that idea.
First of all, the professor mentions those who thinks that the government loses a lot of money on underused Amtrak routes do not understand the true purpose of this train service. It is true that train routes in remote and less populated areas are unprofitable and expensive to maintain. However, residents in those areas have the same right to use public services as people in the city centre do, so it would be wrong to sell the train service to a privately-owned company who would cut routes that don’t produce profits.
Second, the critics say the government funding of Amtrak makes the competition between it and privately-owned transportation companies very unfair. The professor strongly disagrees with this viewpoint. He states the US government actually gives a lot support to airlines and transportation companies by paying for the construction of not only control towers and buildings but also the satellites for navigation. If it hadn’t been for these crucial supports, those private companies couldn’t even exist.
Another point made in the lecture is that the reason why Amtrak train service is less popular compared to other private vehicles is simply because it is out of date. The lecturer gives an example of Japan and Europe where rail service is used very frequently since their trains are always available and go at a high-speed. Therefore, she suggests the government allocate more funding in order to upgrade train service’s quality in the country.
In conclusion, despite the fact that it is unpopular and underused in some areas, the idea of selling Amtrak to a privately-owned company still does not appear reasonable. In fact, the government should take steps to improve Amtrak to increase the use of it.
