The reading and the lecture are both about the stone jars found in an ancient site in Laos. While the author of the reading passage proposes some theories about the application of these stone jars, the professor frowns upon all these theories and claims that the purpose of stone jars is still a mystery. The lecturer casts doubt on the main point mentioned in the essay by providing three controversial reasons.
In the text, the author begins by saying that the jars might have been used for fermentation in order to make drinks for occasional ceremonies. However, the professor disagrees with this idea. He asserts that people in Laos were used to using a container made out of clay to ferment a beverage since creating stone jars was both expensive and time-consuming, while the container made out of clay had the same quality as the containers made out of stone jars.
Furthermore, according to the reading passage, people in Laos used these jars to store water because of drought. This reason explains the fact that many of the jars have been discovered near the bargain routes. On the other hand, the professor points out that the trade routes were in proximity to rivers, and people traveling these routes did not need the use the water in jars since they could have used the freshwater of the rivers.
Finally, the writer believes that since artifacts such as jewelry are found in these jars, they might have been used as tombs. Not surprisingly, the lecturer refutes this claim by contending that the ancient tombs are covered in order to protect both human remains and artifacts against thieves and weather. Nevertheless, neither were the jars that have been found in this location covered by a covering, nor did any covering discover nearby.
To sum up, both the lecturer and the author hold conflicting views on the purpose of stone jars discovered in Laos.
