The article and the lecture are both about the attempt to raise tuna by farming them in ocean cages. While the write raises some concerns towards this attempt, the speaker states some promising methods that can be applied in tuna farming.
First, despite agreeing that female tuna do not naturally lay eggs in captivity, the lecturer also introduces a scientific breakthrough that can help tackle this problem. By injecting special hormones into the captured females, tuna farmers can soon have them lay eggs to replace the tuna that are sold without having to keep catching young wild tuna. These hormones are already proved not causing harm to either the tuna or consumers later on. As a result, they will help eliminate the decrease in the number of wild tuna populations.
Second, it is true that tuna depend on high-protein food, yet it does not necessarily have to be deprived from other fish. In fact, tuna can also feed on plant-based food that is not only inexpensive but also as nutritious and high in protein as the fish type. Consequently, farmers can keep the cost of farm-raised tuna low while still gaining profits.
Third, as regard to the criticism that caged tuna are easily affected by parasites that caused the infestations of blood flukes, the lecturer claims there's already some steps that can be taken in order to treat them. He gives an example of the tuna getting infected with blood flukes. Scientist have found out these parasites only thrive near the sea shore, thus the problem of blood flukes can be solved simply by locate the tuna cages farther off-shore, in the deeper water.
