The reading and the lecture are both about Robert E. Peary who travelled to the North Pole in 1909. More specifically, in regard to the passage, the writer provides three theories about verifying his trip. The lecturer disputes the claims made in the article. His position is that there is no solid evidence that confirm his trip and these clues are not persuasive.
First and foremost, the author of the reading states a committee meets to investigate his clues using his records and instruments. The article mentions that the committee confirmed his argues. This argument is challenged by the lecturer. He claims that the committee was not completely objective because its members were his close friends; In addition, they fund his trip. Additionally, he points out that the committee took only two days to detect his saying, also they did not examine the tools and the records carefully, and so there was bias.
Secondly, the author suggests Tom Avery did the same trip and it took from him less than 37 days, and Peary did it in 37 days. In the article, it is said that Avery utilized the same tools of Peary like number of dogs and the breed. Again, the professor specifically addresses this point when he states these two persons are different because Avery has less weight in his journey and he did not take food with him, but they drop it for him using airplane. He goes on to say that the weather in Avery's trip was favorable but in Peary's trip was harsh, so it is hard to provide support for this claim.
Finally, the author brings his argument to a close by suggesting that Peary took some photographs as a proof. Not surprisingly, the speaker takes issue with this claim by contending that these photographs did not prove anything because his camera was primitive and the primitive were faded. He notes that it is hard to determine the shadow of the sun without precise pictures.
