Japan’s waste output grew from 28 to 53 million tonnes while the figure for Portugal and Poland went up from 2 to 5 and 4 to 6.6 million tonnes, respectively.
The trends for Ireland and Korea were different from those described above. From 1980 and 2000, Ireland experienced about an eightfold rise, from 0.6 to 5 million tonnes. By contrast, there was a significant decrease in the number of waste material in Korea, from 31 in 1990 to above half, 19 million tonnes in 2000.
